Naira: CBN to fine-tune exchange rate
ABUJA — The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), yesterday, said it would soon fine tune the exchange rate of the Naira, even as the nation’s currency depreciated further to N305 against the dollar in the parallel market.
Addressing journalists at the end of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, yesterday, CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, said the CBN would soon come out with efforts to fine tune the exchange rate framework.
This, he said, was to ensure “a more effective and liquid foreign exchange market, taking into account Nigeria’s strategic development priorities, with the policies being designed within an environment of regularly ensuring consistency with monetary and fiscal policies.”
The CBN governor gave no indication that he was ready to ease currency-trading and import restrictions that had kept the inter-bank exchange rate at 197-199 per dollar since March, even though they had been widely panned by investors, criticised by businesses and questioned by lawmakers.

The invite’s center logo features a slanted “Y” in a muted marigold, vermilion, and chocolate brown, which may be a hint that West will still explore neutral monochromes in his upcoming collection. After recapturing Mexican drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman in a pre-dawn shootout and chase through drains on Friday, January 8, 2015, sources say he has been sent back to the same prison he escaped from six months ago.
According to multiple reports, the head of the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel was returned to the same prison he escaped from in a boost for the beleaguered government of Mexican president, Enrique Pena Nieto.

It was further reported that though Guzman had been recaptured and imprisoned, his extradition to the United States of America might take some time.
A senior Mexican official said the attorney general's office would quickly move to determine how Guzman could be extradited, but that it could be months before he would be sent out of the country.
After coming under fire for failing to send Guzman to the United States before he escaped the last time, Mexico said in July it had approved an order to extradite him north of the border.
Hours after recapturing Guzman on Friday, the U.S. Justice department said its previous request to extradite Guzman to the United States still stands.
Obasanjo ‘Ex-President is the greatest African after Nelson Mandela
,’
Former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Ladoja has described former President, Olusegun Obasanjo as the greatest African after iconic South African leader, late Nelson Mandela.
Ladoja reportedly made the comments while addressing journalists at his Ibadan home during a recent meeting.
“Since he (Obasanjo) became Head of State in 1976, he has always had a hand in who becomes the president of Nigeria. It was said he had a hand in how Alhaji Shehu Shagari became the president of Nigeria in 1979. After Shagari, the next one we had was when he became president in 1999,” he said.
“Look at this paradox, Obasanjo became president 20 years after he was said to have had a hand in how Shagari became president. He also had hand in how the late Alhaji Umar Yar’Adua became president in 2007. He also had hand in how Goodluck Jonathan became president and he had hand in how Muhammadu Buhari became president.
“Tell me if there is any Nigerian that can be said to be greater than that. Obasanjo’s voice in Africa today is about number one. When he talks, everybody knows that Obasanjo has talked. We should not minimise the fact that God decides what he wants to do. I am not a pastor, but I believe that God has a hand in everything that is happening in Nigeria, and even everything that is happening in the world.
“If he calls the United States President, Barack Obama, he doesn’t need to say who is Obasanjo? The world leaders know him. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban ki Moon, knows him. He may not be the most righteous but he has been the one that has been so favoured. Buhari became President, essentially because of the vote of the North. Obasanjo became president, not because of the votes of the West, it was not the vote of his own people.
“So, me and my brother (Obasanjo) are not good friends o. We cannot sit down together for one hour without fighting. But it cannot be denied that so far he is the biggest Nigerian and as of today, the greatest African after Nelson Mandela, who is no more,”

The statement reads in part:
“For decades, Nigeria danced in close confines with economic disaster. In the past, higher oil prices allowed us to dodge the worst.”
“We have survived but not thrived. Improvised but not planned. Spent but not invested. Laughed, drank and feasted but did not build, construct or maintain.”
“Now, Nigeria has collided into a wall, merciless and immovable. The present downturn in oil prices may be more than just a transient slump in the business cycle.”
“Nigeria needs economic liberation. Before we can free our economy, we must free ourselves of the economic myths consigning us to our current predicament.”

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu has said that Nigeria no longer has the resources to fund the oil and gas industry.
Kachikwu made the disclosure on Thursday, December 17, 2015, during a town hall meeting in Abuja.
“Financing is going to be a key component of our goal, because new models of financing would have to emerge. The country does not have the sort of resources to continue to fund the oil industry,” the minister said.
“As we go upstream, we are going to begin to see a lot of innovative financing mechanism to provide funding for the oil industry. My dream, if I achieve it, is that by the end of 2016, we would completely exit cash calls and be able to find ways to help support our business and get a lot more autonomy in terms of running the industry and report, basically, profit to the Federal Government,” he added.
Obasanjo Reps to probe former president’s $5M Lake Chad grant
According to the House, the money was given to the commission to carry out “feasibility studies on how to direct rivers to the lake,” but not much was heard about the money after it was released.
The House of Representatives has begun an investigation into how a sum of $5 million, which was given to the Lake Chad Basin Commission by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration was spent.
The investigation began on Thursday, December 17, 2015, according to a report by Punch.
According to the House, the money was given to the commission to carry out “feasibility studies on how to direct rivers to the lake,” but not much was heard about the money after it was released.
“The House is aware that the percentage contribution towards the commission’s annual budget is 40 per cent by Nigeria; 18 per cent by Libya; 20 per cent by Cameroon; seven per cent by Niger; 11 per cent by Chad and four per cent by Central African Republic,” a resolution by the House read.
“The House is informed that the sum of $5m was released by the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to the commission for feasibility studies on how to divert rivers from the Central African Republic to Lake Chad, which was drying up, in addition to funding the Lake Chad Basin Commission’s annual budget through the funding formula, to which Nigeria contributes 40 per cent.
“The House regrets that transaction of this magnitude paid for with tax payers’ money has not been given the due attention it deserves by way of follow-up,” the resolution added.
Following the resolution, House Speaker, Yakubu Dogara ordered the committee in charge to conduct the investigation and produce a report within eight weeks.
